The Black Summer bushfires of 2019 and 2020 were catastrophic. They affected over 50% of the Australian population. The fires had a major immediate impact on Australian communities and the effects of this natural disaster are still being felt today.

More than a year on, the focus is now on supporting recovery efforts in those affected communities, and last week, some of our Keno team members were eager to lend a helping hand.

Five Keno team members headed to the Eurobodalla Shire, located on the south coast of New South Wales, to assist Disaster Relief Australia (DRA). DRA unites the skills and experiences of Australian Defence Force veterans, emergency responders and civilians to rapidly deploy disaster relief teams domestically and around Australia and the globe.

Our Keno team, along with 24 DRA volunteers, volunteered their time to conduct a range of bushfire recovery activities, including the painstaking task of clearing and removing debris.

DRA CEO Geoff Evans said he was grateful for Keno’s continued support and commitment to helping communities impacted by natural disasters.

"We value our partnership with Keno. They are true mates prepared to come and offer their valuable time to help Aussie communities recovering from bushfires."

Keno General Manager Terry Fowler said he was proud to have played his part in providing valuable assistance to Australians in a time of need.

“The Black Summer Bushfires are etched in the memories of all Australians,” he said.

“Many people lost their homes and their livelihoods and some of those people are still struggling 15 months on, which is why we wanted to do our part to help some of those communities get back on their feet.

“This is the second time I have volunteered with Disaster Relief Australia and I am always in awe of the work they do.

“Keno is committed to giving back to communities in need, and we couldn’t be prouder to lend a helping hand.”

In February, Keno made a donation of $100,000 to DRA, which followed a similar donation made in December 2019 for the Black Summer Bushfires.

Keno is a fun game played in more than 3,400 clubs and pubs across Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria.
